Do plants breathe?

As we have learned from previous activities, plants are living things. Do they also breathe? You can do this simple experiment at home to find out!

Equipment:

  •     Clear glass or plastic cups
  •     Water at room temperature
  •     Freshly picked leaves

Procedure:

1.  Take two clear glass or plastic containers.

2.  Fill them with water at room temperature.

3.  Place them in a sunny window or outside in the sun

4.  Inside one of the containers place a freshly picked leaf. Make sure the leaf is completely submerged in water

5.  Leave them undisturbed for a few hours.

6.  After two to three hours check both containers to observe any change.

What do you notice? Does one jar have more bubbles than the other?

After doing the experiment, think of questions like the ones below:
  • Why are the bubbles formed? What is causing the bubbles?
  • Where are the most bubbles found?
  • Will bubbles be formed in the dark?
  • Do plants give out oxygen or some other gas?
